Russian Army: 20 years ago, old partners returned.

In July 2, 2018, the Jane’s Defence Weekly reported that the Russian army and industry sources revealed that the Russian army has officially received the refurbished 2S7 203 millimeter howitzer and 2S4 mortar. The two kinds of artillery were stopped from the end of the cold war and almost disappeared from the Russian army. There were only a few numbers left. Now the Russian army will be re equipped with the two artillery, equipped with the artillery units directly under the military area.

2S7M self propelled howitzer and 2S4 mortar appeared at the Russian army 2017 exhibition.

The 2S7M self-propelled artillery is being launched

The “new” 2S7M type self-propelled artillery received by the Russian army was refurbished using old guns retired 20 years ago, repaired the inner wall of the cannon tube, equipped a new 1V12M command car, installed a satellite positioning system, and reloaded the loading device to increase the speed to 2.5 / minute.

The artillery was reported to be refurbished by the Volgograd – based Titan-Barrikdy, the original “red barricade”, which was founded in 2014 and is now a company of the Moscow thermal Research Institute Group (because the artillery factory in Leningrad, which originally produced this kind of artillery, has closed down).

The Russian military source said: “at the end of June this year, the artillery units deployed in the Central Military Region of kkmaro had received 12 refurbished 2S7M self-propelled artillery,” he said, the troops in the southern and Eastern military areas will also begin to equip the artillery.

The observer network military commentator said that, as a long-range large caliber artillery in service in 1983, 2S7 was an important equipment for the Soviet group’s artillery artillery brigade, because it used rocket extended ammunition to reach a range of 50 kilometers, more than the weapons of the Western same level artillery units at that time. Before and after the Soviet Union, a total of 1097 artillery units were produced, which packed most of the Soviet artillery brigade of the Soviet Union.

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1993, the artillery stopped production, and in the subsequent large-scale Russian military disarmament, the number of offensive weapons was also greatly reduced. At the very least, the Russian army equipped with this type of artillery probably only had more than ten doors, and became Russia’s “artillery directly under the command”.

Georgia’s 2S7 artillery used in Georgia War (later captured by Russia)

In several local wars since twenty-first Century, the 2S7 artillery proved that it was not out of date. In the Russian war in 2008, the Georgian army used 2S7 to shelling the profound rear of the Russian army. Of course, the 6 artillery was seized by the Russian army because of the rapid collapse of the Georgian army. Since then, Ukraine has repaired some of these artillery units in 2016 to counter the new long-range artillery and rocket launchers of the Russian army.

In view of the experience of the war in Ukraine and Syria, the Russian army has a new understanding of the role of these “old style” artillery. After all, Russia has not created a long range gun with a range of more than 2S7, or a large caliber mortar with a power over 2S4. The improved 2S7M of the Russian army has increased the digital artillery system. It should be said to be able to radiate a new life to a certain extent. The old style artillery has been greatly improved through digital transformation, and it has been very evidently verified in the civil war in Ukraine.
